The Creative knowledge base is no help, it only has one article!
EDIT: I'll just add that the headphones setting restricts the frequency range so anything played through normal speakers on this setting sounds really bad.

I've not installed the driver update, in fact, I wouldn't touch CMR4 with a sticky pole, but I do the same as you, i.e. set it to headphones at night and then back the next day, works perfickly. I'd remove all the drivers and reinstall them and forget anything codemasters want you to install (until they release OFP2
)
