It's working! I did what I'd done goodness knows how many times before and left computer powered off but modem on with ethernet in. I left it overnight and this morning it works fine. I did exactly the same the night before too without luck. Not sure what changed, but either way I'm online with Ethernet now. Thanks very much for all your suggestions, you've saved me some hairloss.
