Set up your browser as shown in the Registration section of this site for NTL Home 120 users. If you have a new computer you may find a connection Wizard takes over. Simply make sure that you set up the connection manually using a LAN connection (never dial) and that you detect the proxy serverââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s automatically. If a proxy is specified you will not get onto the registration server to register the new MAC address.
Check you have a valid IP address (one that is in the form of 81.xx.xx.<247).
You should now be able to surf the Internet as before.
On Windows 98SE - after a clean install, and providing the NIC drivers have been installed, the machine should acquire an IP address without problems. Start... Run... Type "winipcfg" and press [Enter]. However, you won't be able to access the Net. On the desktop should be an icon for the Internet Connection Wizard. Double-click this and choose "manual/LAN". No need to auto-detect anything. There's no need to go through the registration process again - it's not necessary and has nothing to do with being able to browse the Net or acquire a valid IP address. The Wizard doesn't run automatically neither. You should now be able to access the Net.
Might be worth pointing out that once you connect to the Net your machine is vulnerable, especially if it's XP. I usually install my firewall, then connect to the Net, then download any patches. Oh and Windows 98SE by default installs the dial-up networking components, none of which are needed. So choose "Custom" when installing the OS and unclick all the Networking components. Installing a NIC driver should cause the OS to install the required TCP/IP and Client software.
Just done all this myself
