Yep, you've pretty much got the idea. Actual amount does depend on what TARIC code the exporter puts on the goods, which is not always what one thought it would be. Also the customs processing charge levied by the courier or postal service can be a bit steep. I think I parted with around 20 quid last time. It all adds up.
