Probably because you were wearing one that was totally inappropriate for your body size/ shape. Some companies just take one suitable for a size 8-10 body (the usual thin strand of elastic style) and add length thinking "that will do", but it just doesn't work for the shape of the larger body.
Fuller figured women need to wear a much broader belt (and, of course, the suspenders need to be proportionately longer) for comfort. Also, of course, the stockings need to be shaped correctly, needing to be broader, not just longer.
I know several larger ladies who wear stockings and suspenders and are entirely happy with them.
