I've sometimes wondered whether part of the original intention behind FilmFour was so that the fledgling film studio of the same name would have an outlet onto the Digital TV platform, enabling them to make more money than they would get by selling DTV rights to the likes of Sky Movies.
Sadly, FilmFour (the studio) has more or less gone belly up because, so I heard, for every money-spinning
Four Weddings or
Notting Hill there were a handful of loss-making dead ducks. FilmFour (the studio) no longer has a permanent staff and Filmfour (the TV station) presumably benefits from fewer smash-hit British movie premieres than its inventors hoped for.
