Looks like cable operators (especially cappers) should be worried.
A new technology is being developed that allows an ADSL like service to be provided at 22Megabits/sec down normal twisted pair copper wire. The best thing about it is that it is not nearly as range limited as ADSL or VDSL. The new technology is called Dynamic Time Metered Delivery (DTMD) and can run at these speeds (or higher) up to 12,000 feet from the exchange!
