Yes, I went to Bristol Grammar (NB you'd get into *serious* trouble for spelling it -er!!!
) and after the first year pupils were "streamed" so you'd have classes 4:1, 4:2... 4:5 where 1 was the "smartest" kids and 5 had the "least smart" ones.
Of course this did mean that your subsequent schooling was decided on the basis of how you did in your first year at secondary school.
(Oh, I was in the x.3 classes, if anyone's interested, but that's because I was smart enough to realise that being too smart was just hard work!
)
