One option is to use a free program like Vdub to capture the initial files using divX at a fairly high bit rate (3-4000) then using these files to make the DVD version. The alternative would be to use the SVCD/mpeg2 which allows a far higher variable bitrate for the video thus maintaining higher quality and allowing easy conversion to DVD as the svcd/mpeg2 codec is actually a DVD format already. Both these options will create files about twice the size of the equivalent vcd/mpeg1 file btw.

One key element in ensuring importability into other applications can be making sure the audio is using the 44100 sample rate and not one of the more complex Ac3 multi channel audio codecs. Various options are availble but the mpeg layer-3 seems to have the widest comapability with programs like ulead in my experience.
