I can either set-up a custom resolution and get it to work that way, or sometimes it will work by getting the control panel to show me the resolutions it doesn`t think this monitor is capable of displaying and going about it that way.

*edit* Quick follow up, looks like it was sheer foolishness on my part. I think what had happened is that when it was searching for the monitor drivers it picked up the old ones on my previous C: drive which is now the F: drive following the new OS install. I guess these were pre-XP ones which it accepted up to a point, but didn`t complain that they were not quite correct.
Forcing it again to look at the most recently downloaded ones appears to have done the trick.
