I was just wondering where you got the access point? Did you get it off the web or from a local shop? I'm saying this because you may end up with a working setup following all the advice above, but for a little more (a wireless router), you would have had a far more flexible setup (it doesn't require the gateway machine to be on).
If you got it from a local shop, you may want to consider going back, explain the situation (maybe say you weren't properly informed), and see if you can exchange the access point for a router (paying the extra cost).
If you got it off the web, you could still try the same, but you would be charged for returning an item that you ordered and is in good working order.
