You can do it if one PC has two network cards. You need to explain what is plugged into what and then we will tell you why it doesn't work. You also don't say what AP you have, the WL 1000 being an PCMCIA 802.11b card.
Edit: You need to plug the CM and the access point into the "gateway" PC. I will assume the desktop is going to be the gateway.
You can either connect the gateway PC to the AP via the RJ45 connection or buy a wireless PCI or USB device. The Cable modem must be connected to the PC via USB or Ethernet (preferable).
You then need to install some routing software on the gateway machine, such as Windows ICS (preferably not!), Winroute, Sygate Home Network, etc. This will translate the requests from the laptop back and forth thru the gateway PC.
