22Mbit "Long Reach" ADSL
 
Looks like cable operators (especially cappers) should be worried.

A new technology is being developed that allows an ADSL like service to be provided at 22Megabits/sec down normal twisted pair copper wire. The best thing about it is that it is not nearly as range limited as ADSL or VDSL. The new technology is called Dynamic Time Metered Delivery (DTMD) and can run at these speeds (or higher) up to 12,000 feet from the exchange!

Well some scientists have got ADSL (yes ADSL) to go as fast as 52mbps but it will never see the light of day in this country so i don't think the cable companies will be getting to worried :)

And since cable can "theoretically" go upto 34mbps there is even less to be worried about!

Sooner or later the UK wil be holding Europe back in BB terms, and we will all benefit from their ultra fast Ultra cheap connections. Until then we have to put up with crud service, crud speeds and Tony Blair.

"When" we get fast connections :( .. such a long wait in this country.

Id still like to see more implementation of DSDN. 100mb "theoretical" ;) Switchpoint networks have made some movement in the US with this technology.

I'm trying to do the maths around this ... as far as I can see, if you take the £10 a month service, then use twice your quota in one month, you will actually pay £24 for 2gb of data.

Now £24 for 54mb service is stunning value compared to £25 for 600kb which I get from ntl. The problem is, I have no idea how many megabytes I upload/download a month. Anyone got any ideas how to work this out? It sounds like a great offer but the devil's in the detail - I suspect it could get quite expensive.

EDIT - Of course, £18 per month for 16gb is potentially far better value, but I'm still blind because I still don't know how many gb a month I actually use with my current service...

I was using something called (I think) download monitor.

I think it keeps track of total ammount downloaded, have a read:)

Yet another application denied to us smug Mac geeks :(

Just as well the machine's so fantastic to make up for these occasional disappointments ... I'll have to have a look, there might be a ticker built in or something. Not that I can do that just now, as the CM has been completely pooched since about 10 minutes after I posted to say it was working again on Saturday ...

Still, an engineer's coming round tomorrow thanks to Grum, so hopefully I can find out.

Then all I need to do is move to the East Midlands. Bummer.

But won't get as I live on the edge of a big city + only have choice of IPStream ADSL and, erm, IPStream ADSL :spin:
