help setting up ethernet

i had a surecom Ep-320X-R1-1 \ 4A in my cupboard and i pluged it in to my sister pc which i have recently formated(want to install all the updates), i want to put the BB which comes from my STB(ethernet midx something) at the moment it comes in to my pc via USB.
i pluged the card in to my sister pc then restarted the STB. on my sister pc it detacts the network card and the connection but the internet does not work. can someone please give me details on what i need to do for it to work?
also i want to do a little bit of testing on it see if the upload speed is better because at the moment i get 9-11kbps upload and 72kbps down with usb

If its a STB you need to register the mac address of the network card with NTL. There is a link for this.... I will get it for you.

A big :welcome: to the site BTW

First of all welcome to NTHW shibby.

Speed will be more or less the same with usb or ethernet as the main difference is about system resources and stability rather than speed as far as the choice between the two is concerned.

As for the connectivity issue there is a special procedure to follow for Set Top Box connections linked to registering the mac address of the ethernet connection.

I don't have the link to hand but will go look for it now. In the meantime I'm sure someone will post the appropriate details soon.

One easy solution is to add an extra ethernet card to the main PC and then use a crossover Patch cable to set up connection sharing.

This way you will be able to connect up both PC's at the same time when you need to, using connection sharing, and also have the benefit of being able to transfer files between the two pc's very easily as well.

This would not involve making any change at all to the existing connection to the internet btw.

True but this is one of those "Occassional" connection and file transfer situations that the simple two PC approach is ideally suited to.

I have mine set up with this simple arrangement so my son (and anyone else) can just plug in and go when they bring their systems round or I am doing windows updates on systems I have recently set up for people and they dont have cable access.

Good idea - I prefer a pc to a router as you have more control... I'm not a big fan of ICS though - I use winroute !!
