BB connection hijacking. Is it possible???
My broadband connection, upload, download, latencey, drops over 50% around 6 or 7pm most evenings.
I have had a new BB modem fitted and am now on a 1M/b connection, but still, my gaming experience is still not up to scratch, ie. my ping is pants. Is it possible for anyone, localy, to hijack my line?? I have monitored large downloads and seen the d-load r8 go from 116K/sec to 15K/sec for five or ten minutes, then shoot back up to 116K/sec. Seems fishy to me. Seems asthough I can see someone elses internet activity affetcing my BB performance. There is an NTL van parked just down the road from me. <----- Jeez am I getting paranoid now or what, lol. |
Re: BB connection hijacking. Is it possible???
All broadband connections share bandwidth. Their will always be more users than the network can handle if everyone using this particular connection were to log on at the same time. All network providers, including NTL rely on the fact that not all user will be connected at the same time. This means at peak times your share of the bandwidth is smaller than at less busy times, regardless of what speed you subscribe to. This is a theretical maximum connection speed, which will always be lower depending on NTLs contension Ration.
Any one know what value this is ? I think I read somewhere this can be 5:1. but another place as high as 20:1 |
Re: BB connection hijacking. Is it possible???
To an extent someone could highjack. "IP Spoofing" or SYN Flooding/DOS Attack is a fairly common method but not normally seen if you're fully patched up. Are you running any firewalls.
Check out Robin Walkers site for excellent trobleshooting tips : http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...ips/index.html |
Re: BB connection hijacking. Is it possible???
Are you running any p2p applications when you are looking at your download performance?

Re: BB connection hijacking. Is it possible???
WIFI hijacking is much easier if people arent protecting themselves and their network. If youre interested then do a google search for War Driving.
On the flipside theres quite a few things you can do to protect yourself. |
Re: BB connection hijacking. Is it possible???
I think its just yer cable equalivant of rush hour. Think about when cable is going to be used most by the most people and 6-7pm sounds about right to me

Re: BB connection hijacking. Is it possible???
can you do a docs diag , found here ?????????? , if you can then it might shed some more light , especially as to how many ppl are on your ubr , i must admit though , it sounds like too many ppl at the same time , is the contention ratio not 50-1

Re: BB connection hijacking. Is it possible???
The -traffic feature of docsdiag shows the number of people on each upstream of the UBR but this cannot be used in ex CWC areas. Have a look at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...iag/index.html

Re: BB connection hijacking. Is it possible???
I do have the XP firewall running all the time, but tend to switch off my other one when gaming. ie, most of the time. I'll try activating it and leaving it on from now on me thinks.
