Usb 2.0 Problem

I have a very good m8 that purchased a usb 2 card.

The card is unbranded but has a via6505 chipset on it.

The os is win98 se with all patches installed. The system
runns the setup file and then asks for a file " USB2VIA.CAT "
This file does not exist on the driver cd and is not on the web.
I have looked all over the place and cant find it.

Anyone who can find the filw will get a very very large :beer:

Via claim that the problem is volatge related ????? WTF.....

:)

I suspected that but a mouse works on the card and a camera !!!

All the drivers load with no problem apart from the missing cat file. If I can find the file I will be in business. I have had 98 working with usb2 before on another system - as long as the microsoft patch has been added its usualy fine.

Some of the usb2via inf files have a reference to usb2via.cat, the one here doesn't

http://maxtor1.slu.edu.ph/Public/DRI...in9x/win98&me/

You could try downloading all of these into a spare directory and trying them instead of the current drivers you're using.

Via does its own USB 2 pci card . See here

http://www.via.com.tw/en/Communications/USB2.jsp

It is not clear what via chipset this is using but its quite possible that the card you have is the same as this via products

The drivers for this device for windows english edition can be found at
ftp://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers...2_V258p3-L.zip

I am downloading them now to see if they have the file you are looking for but they are 9meg ish so it will take me a while.

In the mean time I am posting this info. If they do not have the file you need then sorry. If they do make mine a pint of IPA.

They don't contain the .cat file he needs, but they should still work (much like the ones I posted above yours)

Thanks erol..

If you can track down this poxy file I will buy you a huge beer.

I have tried every site I can think of, driverguide, viatech, viaarena, metasearch and google and there are plenty of users moaning about this missing file. Sadly - no one posts a cure :(

I am going to take a spare hdd over tommorow and install a clean 98 on the system. As thw windows is over 12 months old and is full of apps the clean install may help.

Thanks for you help.

Re: Usb 2.0 Problem

If it gives the option then skip it - otherwise edit the USB2VIA.INF file and remove (or comment out) the entry below;

[Version]
Signature="$CHICAGO$"
Provider=%VIA%
CatalogFile=USB2VIA.cat
Class=USB

The file is not required to drive the card.
