Proxy Servers

What is a proxy server and what does one do?

Everybody seems to be talking about them and also they all seem to have one.

Can someone please help me.

It stores certain web pages on a local server. It reduces network traffic by pulling files from the cache rather than going onto the internet and crowding that place up.
