Standalone DVD writers - any good?

Hello, a colleague's wife is suggesting that they get a standalone DVD writer to record tv programs/films etc.

And before someone chirps in about it, although some may be Macrovision protected this is not a problem as the colleague designed a decoder to strip the Macrovision when recording.

What we do not know is how these standalone DVD recorders work?
Can you copy a DVD in them or do they only copy from the scart input?

I'm sure that the kids would want to be able to copy a DVD game or something but I think that this would not be possible unless it had a HDD in it to make an image first.

Can someone advise what, how etc for these please.

Thankyou,
Clueless of Zoombini land.
