Can't export OE messages

I hope you can help me with this one. I'm trying to export my messages on OE but I get this:
"The export could not be performed. An error occurred while initializing MAPI"
Any Idea if it can be fixed and what I need to do?

Are you trying to export the emails to outlook or to a file ?

The Export could not be performed. An error occurred while initializing MAPI.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
You configure Outlook Express to be the default Simple Messaging application programming interface (MAPI) client.

-or-
You are importing mail from Outlook into Outlook Express, but you removed Outlook from your computer before you tried to import the mail into Outlook Express.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, complete the methods that are described in this section in the order that they are presented.
Reinstall Outlook Temporarily
IF you are importing mail from Outlook into Outlook Express but you have already removed Outlook from your computer, reinstall Outlook and then try to import the mail again.
Change your MAPI Settings
Configure Outlook Express to not be the default Simple MAPI client before you import the mail items. To do so, follow these steps:
Restart your computer, and then start Outlook Express.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the General tab, click to clear the Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client check box, and then click Apply.
Click OK when you receive the prompt to restart your computer.
Click OK, quit Outlook Express, and then restart your computer.

You can now import or export messages.

Stuartbe - the only options I get is to export to ms outlook or ms exchange. I assume I'm doing it right just going to file, export, messages.
Paul - not that I know of

Re: Can't export OE messages

Silly question maybe but the assumption is that you are exporting because you want those messages in a different mail client maybe Outlook.

Have you tried doing this the other way ie open the other Mial client and import to it rather than export from OE?

If you want to export for a different reason what reason is that?

You sorta hint you may have changed some user settings so another possibility is that you are not now logged in as the user with full access to the database you are trying to export but may still be able to find and move the files by looking through the "documents & Settings" folder on the Main drive.

If all esle fails the settings and folders transfer wizard may be a way round as that also includes an option to save mail settings and messages too.

Anyway a few extra things to try hope one of them helps.

Make sure you are the relevant user or admin before you do anything else.

Sorry the kb article did'nt help as I don't have that checkbox under the general tab and if I look in control panel, user accounts I'm still classed as an administrator, but if I go to ms win update it says I'm not.

What I'm tryng to do is, because I have this admin problem I'm trying to save my emails and other docs to a zip disk so I can do a fresh instal of xp pro. I'll try the settings and folders transfer wizard

Re: Can't export OE messages

Good Luck with that then HH.

Fingers toes n eyes all crossed for you. :D

One option given what you are trying to do is to make a backup of the main Documents and settings folder as this will contain all the information for all accounts on the PC.

Having done the re-install you can then go to OE and use the import option and point it towards the files in that documents and settings folder by going to the old user details that contains the database you need.

I would go belt n braces on this one and do both if the messages are absolutly vital to retain.
