Subnet

Hi,

This might seem an odd question, but im interested in how the IP system works. How is my subnet determined, is it done by the UBR's? Could it be changed by the user?

Regards,
Achelon

Not sure if you mean how IPs work in general or not. There is a good site at http://www.learntosubnet.com/ which explains alot of stuff.

Its not possible for a user to change a subnet though.

Your working subnet-mask is issued to your PC by DHCP, along with the IP address. So ultimately, it is issued by NTL's DHCP servers (the UBR just acts as a DHCP relay). It is not possible for users to change it, nor would there be anything to be gained thereby: if the subnet mask is not exactly correct, then some parts of IP communication will stop working.

In simple terms your subnet determines the range of IP addresses you can access without having to go via a router. :D
