Palm hand helds
 

Hi everyone,
This may be the most basic stupid question yet posted on this forum. I have received a Sony TJ 25 Palm as an unexpected gift which I am thrilled about but after toying about with it for a while I got to think what I'm I going to use it for? I can see the use as an electronic diary/address book fine BUT what do others use it for? I am getting the impression that I am overlooking a wealth of other applications that haven't yet dawned on me. It all quite new to me have a PC in my pocket after years of having one sitting on my desk! So as daft as it seems please give me some ideas, what do you use yours for? :confused:
Does NTL have a palm appilication page, I don't see one.

I use mine as...a diary and address book :) Also for keeping track of coursework.
Whilst on holiday in Spain, i downloaded a spanish to english dictionary for it which was handy. Try looking on download.cnet.com at the handheld pages there, plenty of applications.

Personally I've never thought I had a use for one so kept my money

I use mine (Ipaq) extensively for work - connects to my Work PC, and keeps diary/contacts & Task List (what would I do without my task list) all up to date.

And then when I get home, my wife knicks it, and plays Jawbreaker for hours (or so it seems!!). :mad:

Whats worst I can't get ebven close to her high score (1500 mark) :rolleyes:

As well as synch-ing all my desktop data (Contacts, Calendar, tasks etc) I have a synched copy of my mailbox. Thus, in true geek-fashion, I can, with the aid of my trusty Nokia 6310i/Palm Tungsten combination, send and receive email anywhere I wish.

Also, if you don't mind the slow speed (limitation of the GSM network) you can even browse the web with it. You'd be surprised, but some sites, such as the BBC News site and The Register, have special versions of their homepages with lower res graphics and quicker, shorter text-links, just for those of us surfing via handhelds.

In addition, if you want to be really flash (!) you could go for a wireless card and connect your handheld to a Wireless LAN for some untethered internet fun!

For applications for your handheld, their are a bunch of download sites that will give you (some free) apps for you to install and play with. Some good starting points might be:

You can get software that will turn your Palm into a universal remote control. There is one by Phillips (ProntoLite) and there are others available. Make sure that you try out the trial versions first though. My TV and DVD player have sensitive enough IR receivers that it will work, my NTL box and audio decoder need the Palm held about an inch away from the reciever, so for me it's not a viable option.

Another option, if you don`t have wireless net access available, is to sign up for something like AvantGo so you can sync offline versions of various news feeds to the Palm and read them offline.

I`m currently trialling the PDA version of Radio Times, it updates the listing everytime you sync your PDA. The first 2 week trial is free, after that it is 15 quid a year, so I`m not yet sure if I will stick with it. However, it is handy if I don`t want to check the listings on the web, and is quicker than the NTL EPG.
