Norton Firewall slooows connection?
 

I had to uninstall my Norton firewall yesturday and noticed imediatley my 600k connection was LIGHTNING fast? have since reinstalled and its just not as good why is this??

It may be due to the Firewall blocking traffic ports. But in saying that i does block all known ports.

Norton does slow things down - Ditch it

www.kerio.com has a free firewall call Kerio Personal Firewall. Its tons better than norton and its not a memory hog :D

Never noticed any speed problems myself. Its probably the best personal firewall there is. What cpu do you have?

Norton is terrible ... Nothing but problems caused by it to be honest ... Ditch it is what I think aswell tbh

You will probably find that it was blocking ports you need opened. There's always a balance between blocking unsafe traffic and making the connection useable.

Check your logs, see what is being blocked. I find a useful tool to track traffic, is to set up a firewall rule that allows everything through but logs it. Run this rule for a few minutes and try various internet apps, noting the time you started them. Then disable this rule (as it leaves your system totally open!) and check through the logs. See what programs open what ports. Then you can set up rules to open specific ports when needed.

I don't subscribe to the "Norton stuff sucks so dump it" line of thought. I agree that Norton apps are resource hungry, but if you configure the firewall correctly, it should be both reasonable secure and leave the connection functional. It just takes a little time and effort.

Hmm this looks like a spinning debate. I have seen quite a few people running norton with no problems at all, yet I have also tech'd slow speeds and found Norton to be the cause! (very rare). However more than once I have seen people running Win XP Firewall and also an installed firewall product. Make sure you are not doing this. I would advise all to check that

There is a known issue with Norton causing problems because of certain site certificates having gone out of date I believe. If i can re-find the link again I will post it in case this is a related issue.

EDIT: OK RDHW found out this info to help with a specific problem with Word and Norton but if i'm reading the detail in the article in the the link he provides correctly this may explain at least part of the problem.

I am thinking of a PC upgrage ( currently P3 500mhz 256RAM W98SE ) do you think a DELL 8300 3.2ghz 512RAM WXP would cope with Norton Internet 2004 any better?

IMHO that would be like feeding a champion racehorse on dog biscuits.

I personally would go for McAfee or one of the others as many have already said Norton just don't seem to have got their act togther lately.

There are other threads running in the security section which will give you a range of views on both the AV and Firewall progs available though so maybe check those out.

If you have allready bought NAV 2004 then yes it will run a little better on the faster system obviously, but if you are shopping around and need advice on the best one to use, then go Mcafee...

All the large corporations use it so speaks for itself really

Zone Alarm Pro is nice.

I just like changing colours on it though....

User Preference. However....I cant figure how to disable McAfee when speaking to people - just proves how good it is.
