Word on XP

Hopefully this is the correct place to post this.

I have word (MS Office 2000) installed on a PC running XP home. When I try to open "Word" or a .doc in "Word" in take ages to load, I notice in the status bar the message "Requesting virus scan" I assume this is why everything is so slow as all the other programmes Excel, publisher open vitually instantly.
I have searched tools/options to see if there is anything I can "switch off"
I'm running Norton Anti Virus software

Many Thanks

John Huggins

Norton A/V is scanning the document prior to you opening it.

You can turn this feature off somewhere (I think!)

Is it NAV 2004?

It sounds to me like the office virus scanning will be within Nortons settings rather than Office itself.

Re: Word on XP

Could be linked to "office" loading in a bunch of stuff on startup which in turn increases the ammount of files Norton is checking each time you open Word.

Just a thought but worth checking the "other" features in office that may be linked to the problem in this way.

Will have a dig around and see if I can find any specific info that might shed further light.

To rule out NAV, go to options, misc and deselect the office plugin.
if office loads just as slow, remember to select the ofice plugin again

Thank's Xaccers

OK this did the trick, all the office programmes and .doc's now load instantly. Any idea why this is happening? the NAV office plug in has always been selected by default

See http://slashdot.org/articles/04/01/0...tid=172&tid=95 for the explanation of why this has started happening. You are not alone.

Hi
Thank's guys for all your input.
I initially got around this problem by disabling NAV office plug in thanks to the suggestion from Xaccers!

It is nice to find out the real reason. I have now reinstated NAV office plug in and things are back to normal....for the time being at least.

It never ceases to amaze me how good this site is, as a novice if I have a problem this is my first port of call......you always come up trumps!!
