Post-NTL BB Install, any gotchas

I'm going over to a friend's place this evening to help him get his new NTL broadband up and running. As far as I can tell he's added the cheapest broadband option to the TV package he already had.

I have no experience of NTL, so are there any gotchas I should be prepared for?

e.g. Are there any things to avoid on the installation disk? Any patches I should get? That sort of stuff..

Is he indending to connect with usb or NIC? NIC will make the whole thing a bit easier....

The only thing I'd really watch out for is to make sure if he was an existing Ntlworld £10 a month customer he enters the username and password or else he will continue to be charged for this.

Aside from that if the motherboard has a NIC card great. If not USB should be OK on most PC's.

Cheers Dezzo - I think this is his first use of NTL as an ISP so no worries there.

The PC is recent, and running XP Home which should mean minimal usb hassles.

Apparently he's been given an installation CD - is any of the software on there obligatory? Is any of it known to mess with existing configurations (e.g. email accounts, internet prefs and such)? I've developed a healthy mistrust of overblown, supposedly helpful all-in-one installation packages!

The best method of connection is via ethernet and don't evenbother with the NTL installation CD. Have a look at Robin Walker's site which gives invaluable advice on setting up the connection.

It is completely possible to bypass all of the stuff on the CD but you will still need to "register" the modem on the network by going to the registration site.

I don't have the full addy handy but I'm sure someone will oblidge if not I will go check and post it back in a few OK. (The address should be in the booklet that was sent though)

EDIT: Ahhh I see Ian has already posted the link to the site with all the detailed info on doing a manual setup so many thanks Ian.
