Hi all, having just sign up on the site yesterday I don't know if this has been mentioned or not. I can't see any threads. I'm sure admin will move it if it has.

Has anyone had any experience with the wireless network set up offered by NTL? They had two systems on offer last time I checked a few weeks back, but I just looked again and now I seem to only see the single 'Linksys' system offered. I'm sure that is not one of the origional packages on offer!
Any thoughts or knowledge on this?????

hi and :welcome: , i have not experienced ntl's wireless setup but i would have thought you could buy the same gear cheaper elsewhere , it isnt ntl specific gear :)

yes but you wont get any support from ntl unless its bought thru them...

I agree - setting up a wireless system is fairly simple (especially if you have only 1 PC/Laptop).

Also, the help provided here is excellent, and if the experts here do not know (and if they don't, I would not expect NTL would), they can usually point you in a better direction.

Ntl don't actually sell these and it does say (well last time I looked :erm: ) that it isn't supported by Ntl

The link from the ntlworld web site takes you to Simply Computers web site so thats who you are buying the hardware from.

Also i have found that (depending who you speak to in support) that some will give you some help with a problem even though the hardware isnt supported (as some support staff may run the same equipement setup at home).

its a referral scheme - support is minimal. ntl will determin if its a pc or modem issue and provide support as nexexxary if they think it is a router problem then they pass you on to linksys or actiontec as appropriate

Not sure about other regions but in Celtic (Glasgow, Northern Ireland, Wales) you can order a wireless router when you order broadband for £65.00

Thanks everyone, I have been told by NTL that they do not (officially) supply any support for routers. I got a router and it was such a pig to set up that I gave up. It required a load of manual configuration and no drivers which was impossible to sort out and never worked, and I am not a PC dumb dumb (not an expert either thou). What appealed to me about the system offered by NTL was it seemed to have a eliment of automated set up almost like a plug and play application.
I have 2 desktop PCs and a laptop to network.

if ur pc can connect to broadband it should be a able to connect to router - the settings are the same

as long as the router is configured to use a dynamic IP addressing and the cm is rebooted before connecting to the router it shoudl work

If it's any help, I've just bought a Linksys wireless Broadband NAT Router/hub and wireless PCMCIA card from ebuyer (yes, I know... but I've yet to have any problems with them):

£11.74 - PCMCIA wireless card (quickfind - 52909)
£49.30 - wireless router (quickfind - 51436)

It's all 802.11b kit which to be honest is fine for me, even at it's slowest it's faster than my broadband connection so no loss of service there and because it's also a hardwired hub, if I do have any large transfers, I can just hardwire the network connection to up the speed for a while.

Prices do seem to be good - especially the PCMCIA card. I set the hardware up in no time at all and I'm using it now.

Thought the ebuyer prices might sway you when compared to NTL/Simply.

Good choice of kit - I have a linksys router with a seperate netgear WAP (wireless routers were silly money back then) an have not had any problems - running both windows and linux laptops through netgear cards, all works well :)

The linksys router is a doddle to set up, and has been as reliable as can be :D

I hope you enjoy the wireless/broadband combination - I can honestly say I would not go back to a purely wired network :D
