newsgroup

I subscribed to one of the free groups, with a download cap this morning. What a difference (compared to ntl!).

Kind of defeats the obejct of paying ntl for broadband though.

Tip for you all - I rang up to cancel ntl and they offered me half price telly for 6 months to stay. I pay for the full package. A discount always helps to focus the mind when putting up with ntl! It may work for you too!

Cheers.

(which is of no use to me).

one such is teranews

http://www.teranews.com/

- 'free' sign up with a one off fee of about $5 with a credit card, gets you an account capped at 50MB per 24 hrs. They carry more groups than NTL - especially the binary groups, have superior retention and are pretty reliable.

try alt.free.newsservers for a few more - but not all carry binaries or allow posting.

I'd forgotten about Bubbanews - I signed up ages ago, but had been using Astraweb, before they pulled their free service. Amazingly the account is still active - thanks vinyll. :)

i subscribe to claranews and as you say it defeats the object of using NTL for broadband access. currently pondering on dumping NTL going back to BT plus sky and looking at http://www.fireflyuk.net/services/adsl.htm at least with them you get giganews usenet access thrown in and can have 2mb for a couple of quid more than NTL 1mb
