IP address for autoreg.autoregister.net

I need to re-provision again soon and know it'll be a problem, it always is.

In the past I've had a LinkSys router/hub and it never found the registration page via the pseudo domain-name of 'autoreg.register.net', the way I had to do it was look in the DNS server list on the router and manually point my browser at the first IP shown there, which was not a DNS server but the autoreg page. This always worked.

I've now changed routers and my new Netgear doesn't list the DNS addresses, so I won't be able to use this trick.

Past experience tells me if I ask tech. support they'll not have a clue what I'm on about .. so can someone please tell me its' IP. I've tried using nslookup to resolve the name and it doesn't.

The MAC is already cloned ... are you sure it's that easy? I don't recall being able to enter any old IP, however I recognise your nick. from of old so will believe you. :D

Cheers.

Just for future reference ... the correct name is 'autoreg.autoregister.net' which does get resolved by NTL's DNS servers, maybe I've been trying the wrong name all along.

I've updated the thread title with the correct address just incase this thread is 'searched' by someone in the future as a source of information via the sites search facility. :)

As i understand it, you cant enter any old IP address but you SHOULD be able to enter any old domain name. This is due to the DNS server address you are given before you are registered being one that returns the IP address of the autoreg 'site' for EVERY dns lookup.
By the sounds of it your router wasnt picking up the dns server properly, so that wouldnt have worked though :).

Re: IP address for autoreg.autoregister.net

It worked fine. :tu:

When I first got BB in 2001 I had problems registering because at that time I had a Linux firewall box and had to do some tinkering to get it to find autoreg. Since then I've switched to router/hubs and still had problems with the Linksys, never managing to get to the registration page by name, probably something to do with its' handling of DNS lookups, on the three occasions I changed service.

This time I did just what you all said and was mildly surprised it proved painless ... the Netgear hub handled it fine so I guess my previous problems were the Linksys.

Anyhow, back to 1Mb for a bit ... cheers all for your help. :D

Happy Christmas shopping to one and all. :rudo:

Re: IP address for autoreg.autoregister.net

To be pedantic, STB doesn't use any form of autoreg - that's explicitly SACM only. And for STB, any simple domain name with no trailing part should work as long as it has a dot in, such as a.b or www.botty.com or whatever.
