Ethernet nightmare
Hi.
I have a Telewest Surfboard 5100 Modem, USB/Ethernet. The USB Broadband connection works fine. When I connect to the Modem via Ethernet to PC the Telewest Broadband software connection CD cannot establish a connection, it reports a DNS Error. I have tried connection on a Desktop PC and a Laptop. No Joy.:td: The Local PC Ethernet card IP address configures to: IP. 169.xx.xx.xx which is not compatable to the Telewest IP address Do I need an Ethernet crossover lead? |
Re: Ethernet nightmare
Have you rebooted the Cable Modem?
|
Re: Ethernet nightmare
If you are switching between USB and Ethernet, you need to unplug the modem from the mains first, switch, then plug the modem back in.
Basically, the modem will only pick up that you have switched connections when it is powered up. ---------- Post added at 10:10 ---------- Previous post was at 10:10 ---------- :welcome: to the forum, BTW. |
[Merged] Ethernet probs
Hi, from a Motorola Surfboard USB/Ethernet Modem, should it be possible to USB to a desktop PC and Ethernet to a Laptop for Internet connection?
Would it be better to Ethernet both machines via a Router? |
Re: Ethernet probs
You can only use one of USB / Ethernet at once.
Yes, the router is a better option. Next question. |

Re: Ethernet probs
Hi all, I can establish a connection via the Motorola Modem via Ethernet to the Desktop PC and Laptop seperately.
I have tried to use the Router so I can use both at once, the Router has an address of 10.0.0.10 Please clarify Ethernet IP/Gateway addresses. The Desktop has a Ethernet card, the laptop a PCMCIA card. thanks. |
Re: Ethernet nightmare
Thanks Stuart and Zeph, .... yes the reboot did the trick.
I can establish a connection via the Motorola Modem via Ethernet to the Desktop PC and Laptop seperately now thanks. I have tried to use the Router so I can use both at once, the Router has an address of 10.0.0.10 Please clarify Ethernet IP/Gateway addresses.
