MS06-055 Released out-of-band

Just a heads-up in case your Windows boxes aren't set to notify automatically on security patches, MS has released MS06-055 out of band.

Apparently if you've applied the ACL workaround that mitigated against this flaw, you'll need to undo that fix before applying the patch.

Presumably this patch isn't required if you're running IE7?

I think it is actually, if you read ADd's link...

It's more a windows patch than an IE patch.

TheNorm don't use IE7, so not 100% sure but I have found a Microsoft community forum if no one here knows:
M$ Forum

You have to use IE to view it ;)

Or visit M$ update website and see what it says, but I think Cobbydaler is right

From the Microsoft article:

Quote:

Why are the security updates for Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 labeled as Internet Explorer Updates?
While this is a security update for Windows, the files are serviced from the Internet Explorer code base on these platforms. As such, it follows Internet Explorer standards for packaging as well as detection and deployment.
So I guess if you're running IE7 you need it...

Well I tried to install the patch but it said it wasn't required, and I'm using IE 7.0.5700.6 with XP Pro 5.1.2600 SP2 build 2600

The tricky area of beta programs ;)

I guess you have uninstalled IE6, so perhaps the code within IE7 is not affected. I don't know the ins and outs, but i believe these patches are released for alpha programs. If M$ say you are fine, guess you are :)

That's reassuring...

I suppose the only way to find out is to test it! Now, which websites contain the nasty pieces of code?
