Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
Just got this modem today, and can't get it to access the internet. It connects fine to the modem wirelessly but any websites or whatever that are opened time out.
Like I said though, I can access the router via 192.168.1.1 in the wireless menu. I'm on ntl and have set it to auto configure DHCP. Any help would be seriously appreciated! edit: Posted this in another thread, needed own post here :P |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
have you rebooted the router since connecting it to the modem?
How do you know your connecting to the modem ok? |

Well, it is able to ping www.google.com using the UI of the router with 0% packet loss. So I just figured it should be working... |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
if you remove the router altogether and connect the PC to the modem direct what happens?

Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
There's a handy utility on the Linksys site here... http://www.linksysfix.com/check/Home...tm?callerID=WS
Try using that on the PC. Had a similar problem with a friend's PC not so long ago, and running the utility above resolved it straight away. Didn't bother to look into what it was causing the problem as it was fine afterwards ;) |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
Thanks Gareth, I'll give it a try now.
Much appreciated. :D ---------- Post added at 00:02 ---------- Previous post was yesterday at 23:54 ---------- EasyConnect detected that the computer and router could communicate wirelessly, but nothing about the internet settings. The netcheck utility also insists that there's no problems. I'm hooked up to the ethernet now through the router, but need to get this wireless sorted ASAP as I have a good bit of work to do in private, and it's really starting to annoy me :P Thanks for your help guys, anything else you can suggest? |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
Hmm, too bad, it worked straight away for me.
When you're connected to the router wirelessly, what IP address is it giving you? Do an ipconfig /all on Windows, or an ifconfig eth0 for *nix (assuming your wireless card is eth0 of course). It should be 192.168.1.x. Also, do you have anything lsited in the DNS servers when you do the ipconfig? |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
IP Address when connected wirelessly is 192.168.1.4, which seems fine.
There is one DNS, and it's 212.104.130.65. When I took the ethernet cable out, for a second it appeared to work fine on the wireless. Whenever I click a hyperlink, it will update the status along the bottom bar to "Transferring data from..." and will appear to load. I have once managed to get just text when trying to view this forum, or at least the text of the forum menu hyperlinked on blank background. |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
 Blimey!
As you say, your IP address is fine... however, not sure that DNS is correct as that belongs to Eclipse Internet instead of NTL. You might want to try doing a ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew to see if it gives you an NTL DNS server instead. You don't have that DNS server manually set, do you? |

However, it worked for all of two seconds, then no websites would load (time out), however, MSN and Skype stayed open and I was able to message people fine... This is really strange... Thanks for your help so far Gareth, you've got me a lot closer, but god is this ever frustrating :p I keep having to plug in ethernet to access websites, though I tried signing in and out of MSN, I couldn't sign back in. Skype remained fine though  |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
Check that you don't still have the DNS server entry hard coded in the settings for your wireless connection, via the Control Panel -> Network Connections -> right-click it then select Properties -> highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP then click Properties. Make sure that you're using Obtain DNS Server Automatically.
---------- Post added at 00:44 ---------- Previous post was at 00:41 ---------- The Eclipse DNS server is most likely configured to not work for non Eclipse customers, and when it realises you've not got an Exlipse-assigned IP address, I'd guess it ignores you from then on. At a guess, I'd say that the applications that are working are relying on using the IP address instead of domain names, so they won't need to perform any DNS queries and can connect fine. You'd probably find you could browse the internet fine, if you knew the IP addresses of all the sites you want to visit instead of using the human-friendly domain names ;) |

I am honestly incredibly grateful for this, I can't thank you enough. All appears to be fine now, let's just hope it doesn't reset if the modem or router is turned off :P Again, thank you!! |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
Cool, glad it's working. :D
You'll be fine from now on. Even if there's a power cut, the router will remember its settings, and the modem won't really care if it gets reset or not :) |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS Internet Problem
Excellent. Working the best.
Many thanks Gareth, and thanks for bearing with my terrible descriptions, just very happy it's finally working :D |
