I'm running AVG. I've unchecked the outgoing mail tab but it's made no difference.

Rebooted everything just in case? What software are you using and have you tried re-building the account in it?

I'm in the Coventry area and people (who are not on NTL network) are reporting that their emails to ntl addresses are bouncing back

This happens with Outlook Express when it (or the PC) crashes whilst sending mail. It has left a connection to the server open. The server won't set up a connection as it thinks you are already connected. (The same can happen when you are trying to check for mail.)

For once it's not an NTL problem (although I don't understand why they don't just time out "stale" connections). If you reboot the PC I'll bet it works again. This is one of the most frequent issues people have with Outlook Express.
