NTL new rip off 0845/0870 charges.

I notice from Oct 2006 NTL are increasing the cost of calls to 0845/0870 numbers
The New rates are:
0845 D. 5p E. 4p W. 3p
0870 D. 10p E. 8p W. 6p

Existing rates:
0845 D. 4.50 E. 2.25 W. 1.25
0870 D. 7.99 E. 3.85 W. 2.99

http://www.home.ntl.com/page/phonepricechange

Thats an over 100% increase in their 0870 evening rate:mad:

I notice they are also introducing a new flat rate phone charge to UK landlines for calls outside of our “unlimited” tariffs. From then, for such calls you’ll pay 3p per minute no matter what time of day you call – this includes cable-to-cable calls.

Connection charges of 6p a chargeable call remain unchanged

Look around for a better deal fella ;) they are out there.
Sooner or later companies wonder why they're losing so many customers and do something about it, ie decrease charges, or just do what ntl do and lay off staff.
As a matter of interest, BT have decreased their package deals, go have a look, I am with them and have had no problems, thats not to say that is reflected across the full customer base, but the easiest way to make your opinion known sometimes is to move :)

Other options are avalable too - if you have BB then Vonage and the like are good value for money (£7.99 a month for the line and all landline calls to UK and ROI).

Definitly a good time to look around :)

Yes most definitely a good time to look round.:) Even if its to reduce the cost of your call charges.

Unfortunately Vonage charge extra for 0845/0870 calls, and their are other hidden charges.

I have started to look around .But if you want to keep your line rental with Cable and benefit from cheaper calls you can of course use the freephone access numbers of the following suppliers.

http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php for cheaper mobile and ngn calls

http://www.1899.com/mobilerates.php for cheaper geographical calls.

I switched from NTL landline back to BT, even saving some money! - i'd look around for better deals, or just not call CS unless you really need to.

You have to decide what's the best deal for you - if you make very few NGN calls (like me as I use www.saynoto0870.com) and very few Mobile calls then Vonage is going to look good as you're instantly saving ~£3.50 a month before you even factor in your calls.

Personally I use a selection of Vonage - 1899/18866 for my calls (I'm too lazy to look at the new 18185 service to save a few pence a month on an already tiny bill:) )but that may be too complicated for some. If so then something like Vonage (or it's kin) would work well. For those looking for info on the best supplier for them, take a look here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi...95003038,99872,

Edit - also don't forget that 1899/18185/18866 all charge a per minute fee for using them via the cable/mobile 0800 number - if you are with BT for your line rental then you pay a few pence PER CALL not PER MIN. So again Ntl loose out if you want the cheaper call costs :)

Re: NTL new rip off 0845/0870 charges.

I did look at Vonage but i noticed

The activation Fee £9.99 The Shipping and Handling fee £8.99 for the FREE? router. The expensive UK mobile rates: Day 15p Evening 10p Weekend 5p.
The dear Intl Rates to non free Intl Destinations.

I also looked at 18866 but was put off by 5p connection charge 1899 only 3p.

I am looking at going to BT and using 1899/18185 and Primus Saver 2 with Orchid Dialer.

I think you'll find they'll look at waving the activation/postage costs if you ring to order it. :)

Like I said a mixture of providers is best but if you want simplicity Vonage et al would probably work out best depending on your call pattern. :)
