Help Router problem!

Had a router for past 2 years with no problem until 2 months ago
Just bought a new 1 Linksys-BEFSR41
Now i can't switch off the modem Ntl250 because it will take me ages to get
back on the net when i switch back on, have to go in setting and just press save,Another thing is that my speeds with the router is very slow D/l at 600k speeds. But it can't be the router since my old 1 was doing the same thing, tried allsorts of thing's to get the speed up.If i bypass the router i get full speeds can't work it out, its like the modem does'nt like any routers at all.

Thats the same router that I've got. No speed problems with either my old silver modem or the new blue one (can't remember model numbers... 200 & 250?)
