Be There Broadband Speed
 

So, i'm thinking of switching to Be There once my exchange is enabled

"Be Unlimited should be available in your area from January 31st 2007"

How good will my connection be?

From a site i checked it says:

You are approximately 780 metres from the exchange (straight line distance). - Not sure how far that is in miles, but how good will my Upload & Download be if im this far from the exchange?

You're just under half a mile from the exchange so you might be able to get a good speed.

780 metres = 0.48467 miles.

I haven't really got a clue but i'd say you might get nearly max speed. I'm sure someone else has a clearer answer. :)

Rough assumption 780 metres gives an implied copper line length of 1.17km.

According to the chart http://www.internode.on.net/images/c...2-distance.jpg that distance is good for 23Mbit, factoring in the real world noise, loss, etc I'd say 20Mbit is perfectly possible, a download rate around 2.2MB/s+ could reasonably be expected.

note the straight line distance still isnt a great way to assume how good service you will get, I got fooled by this before I moved I checked my distance and it was 1.65km on samknows so I thought great should be fine, especially as it was almost half the distance of another guy I know who gets 5mbit.

adsl got activated and it starts at 6000kbit but the noise bursts start and 2 months later I am lucky to get a 4mbit stable rate and bt want me to synch at 3mbit and i still have stability problems. My actual line distance is if I remember right 2.6km and I have an attenuation on 50. I think ofcoms estimation of the real line distance been 1.4 (140%) of crow distance is too low as everyone I know who has reported real vs crow distance is way above 1.4 and this gap seems to increase on longer lines as the line presumably has more diversions en route. On top of this I am told the attenuation for a real length of 2.6 should be alot lower then 50 so looks like another factor on my line has decreased quality probably the cable used.

As a comparison I have my sisters line, their is a exchange for this residental area so as expected the lines are shorter, her crow distance is 700m and the attenuation is 19, I dont know the real distance for this line. If the attenuation is below 43 you should expect at least 8mbit if below 30 it should be a decent number 12+ mbit but is a gamble and if the line turns out poor then as far as BT are concerned its tough luck. Even if a neghbours line is good it doesnt garantuee yours will be.

Cheers for that mate... Unfortunately blows JamesHenry's prediction out of the water a bit.

Now my one reason for staying at NTL has gone, I might consider moving.

Does anyone have any line speed calculators for ADSL based on distance from exchange?

If you ring up Be* and ask for a estimate that will give you one.

But only with a BT Number

do a postcode check its usually reasonable accurate for estimated distance, ofcom suggest an average of 1.4 actual distance per 1km of straight line distance I think as the line gets longer this increases and ofcom maybe too conservative.

If your straight line is over 1km their is a moderate risk the line may be too long but also could still be a good short line, if its under 1km the chances are it will be fine and give at least 12mbit.
