Ubuntu - Can't gain network access to second PC via Windows XP PC
I have installed Ubuntu on my old PC, this is connected to my main PC by cross-over cable.
I'm 99% of the way there: I have managed network printing from Ubuntu. I can save via that PC onto my Windows XP's shared drive and internet connection is shared OK :-) The bad news - I can't gain access from XP machine to Linux  I can 'see' it listed in Windows Network/MSHome, but can't 'explore'/gain any access. Windows prompts for user name and PW, I have entered my Linux logon Id & PW to no joy, but wonder if I should be putting in a different path name at all? \\PC2\????? maybe \\PC2\usr\share or similar. Don't yet understand the 'structure' of this. Have tried everything I can think off, just can't get to this final stage - which is the most important bit! Any help greatly appreciated, but please be gentle as I am a total novice/dunce :dunce: at Linux (tried previously and gave up), but am now so close to doing what I want. I'm assuming SAMBA is installed correctly as I can see Win XP PC etc. Cheers |

May be to do with permissions. I don't use Ubuntu, but a good page for setting up a Linux/Windows network with Samba is here...

Re: Ubuntu - Can't gain network access to second PC via Windows XP PC
You don't need samba for a Linux box to "see" any Windows partitions, so I wouldn't assume that samba is set-up. I don't use Ubuntu either, so I'm not sure if the packages are installed by default (although a quick Google suggests it's not).
Samba effectively turns your Linux box into a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) that your Windows machine(s) can then use to access files and other resources. Cobbydaler's link is a good one, but you might like also to read this one... http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/w...a#Introduction [linuxhomenetworking.com] |

Thanks for that reply. Hmm, there were a number of SAMBA things listed, some already installed, however, I selected them all for now(!) and they seem to have installed. Trouble is I then can't get to step 2 applications/configurations/kde - Ubuntu is a gnome based set-up. I did a search for SAMBA and found folders and even a config file. I think I need to take a step back on this, please, what is the equivalent of Control panel? Also what is the equivalent of an .exe file - I only know Windows, so I need a bit of hand-holding here Gareth, Thanks for your reply, but I'm getting very lost :erm: is there a Ubuntu expert that can show me how to go the way you have both suggested please?. Gretaful for both your help, but as I say, I only know Windows and this is alien to me :Yikes: Everyone says how easy/much better Linux is to Windows, however when you know nothing I don'tfind it so :dunce: Cheeers |

I'm now not just sure what/where I should be saving stuff. What I am seeing via windows onto Linux PC is a list of system/program files (and before that my networked printer), what path name should I be showing to get to 'me' on that other PC or 'shared' area? I don't see 'home', 'usr' or my name anywhere, even doing a search? Maybe I don't have permission in the right places? Many thanks for the replies, so glad I found the stuff I printed and put somewhere 'safe', must do the same wit this thread. Cheers |

/home/yourusername is where your files should be.
What are you seeing? |

I think I'll deinstall all the SAMBA components, then maybe even read some of the instructions a bit, before having another go. Thanks for your help, I may be back ;) |

Have found my original thread on this subject from April, so will continue using that.
