If it is the August updates, I would apply them asap as there is a very serious problem in MS06-040 - even made it to the BBC website.

reboot? Do you have the Wuauclt.exe running still? Can't remember the file name but if it is you won't lose the icon till you kill the process or reboot.

Not at my m/c just now but isn't there a right click menu with an option to turn off the taskbar icon. It's around somewhere. :erm:

When that warning comes up, on the left there is 'Change the way Security Center alerts me'. Click that and set it *not* to advise about Updates.
look in the control panel, security center for something to disable or click on.

To disable the security centre: -

Open the control panel, double click administrative tools and double click services.

In the services box that opens, scroll down until you can find an entry called "Security Center" or something like that.

Double click it and another box will open. Towards the middle of it, there will be a section called Startup, with a list.

Click on the list and from the options that appear, choose 'disabled'.

Click OK and exit out of the services console.

This will disable the security center, and all of the annoying nag popups you've been getting. But remember to visit the Windows Update website frequently - there will often be a notice posted on CF when MS are about to release their monthly wave of patches so when you see it, head straight to Windows Update and get patched. :)

I've got Auto Updates set to notify only ("Notify me but don't automatically download or install").

Works well for me. Better than having it turned off completely, as it doesn't nag, plus it means I get to choose if/when to install anything, & don't need to bother manually regularly checking Windows Update.

i have mine set to notify me, before download, and then i just select the ones i want, and then omit the ones i dont, it then asks do you want these to permantly not be needed, and you say YES thank-you...end of story :)
