Water + Computers... i was just joking but...

haha, i just got done talking to my friend who moved to japan (i live in the States), and she mentioned her laptop got broken, well i had to ask how naturally, and well, i always joked about people pouring water on computers, but i never thought anyone would actually do it, haha, well, apparently she and some of her friends got a little drunk and started wrestling and accidentally spilled some beer on the laptop, and so she thought she could clean it up by pouring water on it, hahaha :p: , so yeah, she apparently fried the whole thing, and she's sending it to me right now in the hopes that i can at least salvage the hard drive and her files (not that she cares too much, but she had a bunch of cds and pictures on there)

haha, so yeah, laugh as a simple joke becomes real life, lol, "nothing is fool proof enough for a well-trained idiot", and share a little advice on how i might attempt to recover her stuff, oh, and for the record, she's had this thing broken for about 3/4ths of a year now, she just didn't want her parents to know, hahaha, well, hope you enjoyed it!

The shipment alone back and forth has gotta be dearer that a new laptop over there  and as for asking how to here, if you didn't know how, why are they sending it to you ???

Kinda reminds me of when the IT dept. at my old firm broke one of the laptops with some coke...

We weren't supposed to have open drinks near computers but hey it's a can so thats okay.

One of them had got a freebi rugby ball things and they decided it would be amusing to sit and throw it to each other. Fine, the computer systems seem to be working at the moment so they're probably bored.

Throw-catch,
Throw-catch,
Throw-catch,

all afternoon until Throw-miss finds its way to said coke can (cunnningly positioned in front of the open laptop) and the evil brown stuff does its job.

A number of red faces and much amusement for the call centre floor (including me at the time)

lol, because i'm about the most tech savvy person in...well....what feels like my whole school probably, so that's saying something, haha, and i have a reputation for finding some way or another to do everything related to computers, heh, what can i say, haha, and so she figures it's about as ****ed as it's gonna get so she doesn't really care, i'd have fun playing around with it, and most importantly, her parents wont find it when she moves back to the states (of which, i will be returning it to her then instead of mailing it back)

Im not as sure this is as bad as it sounds...

I spilled a whole cup of coffee over a work laptop before and the real problem was not the coffee itself but the sugar it contained which sticks to the mobo and is really difficult to get rid off.

If the PC is covered in a sugary drink and the power is off and preferably with the battery disconnected and hard disk removed a good soaking in de-ionised water *might* actually help save it.

I wouldnt want to try it though.

If there is no sugar, turn it off asap, and take it apart and clean it up then let it dry out a while - you might actually find it still works.
