Setting up a wireless network
 

Please treat me as having an IQ of 5

I have a STB feeding a direct connection to a laptop and I want to be able to move laptop in the lounge when needed.
I have got a linksys wireless G card with speed booster and a linksys wireless broadband router complete with a slot to accomodate the card, how do I set it up ?
Some years ago whilst an engineer was working at my house I remember something he said about a provisioning screen which alowed you to choose a PC or router but many brain cells have died since then.
Could someone please help :o:

I believe the wireless card should go in your laptop, unless the laptop came with integral wireless connectivity.

Could you tell us the exact models of your router, card & laptop?

It's easiest to get the router setup first wired, and then add in the wireless.

First power off STB and PC. Unplug ethernet from PC and connect to the WAN port on the router, run ethernet from the router LAN port to PC (or laptop) ethernet port. Power on STB, let settle, power up router, let settle, power up PC (laptop).

You now need to register the router with ntl's servers (necesary with STBs but not cable modems). You'll need your account information of PID and Passwords ntl originally supplied when you first got broadband. The first time you attempt to use internet explorer you should get redirected automatically to the ntl registration page. If you dont, try typing "start:ntl" (the bit between the quotes) in the internet explorer address bar. Enter the details required.

Once the router is registered you can think about wireless. That should be a case of following the instructions on the easy start leaflet provided with the wireless stuff. If need be though you can check some of the settings on your router, normally the address would be 192.168.1.1 for a linksys. In particular make sure you set up the wireless security passwords. You'll need to add the wireless card to your lappy, and run the CD supplied with the wireless. Reboot the lappy when swapping to wireless , having unplugged any ethernet.
