need help with mac addresses and router..

Ok i read somewhere i need to make the mac addresses the same. Well at the moment I set the PC to have the same MAC address as my thomson speedtouch 580 router. However it didn't detect anything on installation. When i plugged the ethernet cable straight to PC (no router) it worke, and stated a different MAC address...

So does the PC, router, and cable modem have 3 different MAC addresses? do i need to make them all the same?

I tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew with my router but it didn't work...

it says DCHP yes though =S

hope someone can help!

Changing mac addresses shouldn't be necessary.

Reset the router so that it works as manufacturer's default and picks up the IP automatically from the Modem. Reset your computer so that uses it's normal mac addy (if you had changed that) and the Ip is set to auto acquire.

Now make sure you power off the modem, router and PC. Power on the modem, let lights settle, then the router, then the PC. Remember every time you change the device directly connected to the modem, the modem must be rebooted.

ok thanks for the quick reply =)

I reset the router, reset PC MAC address turned everything off, connected PC to router, Router to modem

Turned ont he modem first, waited a few mins, then the router, waited again

then the PC

not connected... I tried putting in the install broadband CD but it said "could not connect to NTL servers" (error 800)

However when I tried ipconfig release and renew it seemed to be fine. Is there anything else i should need to do?

You won't need the ntl install broadband CD unless you use a USB connection (horrible thing).

You say ipconfig release and renew says it's all fine now. So you are connected with your PC via router to modem, and browsing OK? If so that's it.

sorry i meant that was when it was connected via router, but i couldn't browse.

at the moment I am connected without the router. I will try setting it up again and see what happens...

ok i tried it again but no luck. It seems like the router is not picking up a connection. When i go into the router settings the connection says:
IP Addresses/Netmasks: Unassigned
Primary DNS: -
Secondary DNS: -

should i try and et up a new connection? does it need certain options which might not have been set for this one? ipconfig release and renew worked fine, but the browsing wasn't there..

I did a quick google search on Speedtouch 580. The only router it came up with was a Speedtouch 580(i) which is an ADSL router, and will not work if connected to the NTL cable network (or an NTL phone line).

Linksys WRT54GS is very popular if you want wireless capability as well as wired.
