Wired networking NTL
Hi, is it possible to let my laptop use the my ntl connection at the same time as my main pc?
I do not have a wireless network card in my pc so I was hoping to do it the 'wired way', if there is one :p. I currently have my ntl modem plugged into my router and a connection from the router to the PC, the internet works fine. I have also plugged the laptop into the router- it comes up saying that its connected to a LAN however it wont access the internet. I've done this before with AOL using a hub to connect between the laptop and pc and then made the laptop proxy through the main pc in order to connect to the net. I have a Netgear super wireless router , 2 cat5 cables and a 10/100Mbps Ethernet Switch but no clue on how to get it working :erm: Any help would be appreciated. Thanks =) |

Re: Wired networking NTL
What's plugged into the cable modem? The Netgear router or the switch? Is the router a proper cable router (not an ADSL router)?.
On the working PC, is your IP address an external address (eg 82.x.x.x) or an internal address (192.168.x.x) - To find out open a command (DOS) prompt and type ipconfig And :welcome: to CF! |

I'm suspicious that your router / hub /switch may be the cause of the issues. What model exactly of Netgear router do you have - we can then check it's specs. Assuming a capable router, your setup should be: modem <ethernet> WAN port [router] LAN port<ethernet> PC to connect your laptop you can then either add a second ethernet cable from your router LAN port to the laptop, or go wireless. |

Re: Wired networking NTL
I have a netgear 108mbps super wireless ADSL router DG834GT- my gf got it with her laptop. I have cable and I know its an ADSL router but is there anyway to manually configure the router so that it will work with the modem connected to a router port and the router to the pc?
Not got the money for a new router lol Thanks |
Re: Wired networking NTL
If you were able to do that, it wouldn't function as a router, but just a switch, so you wouldn't be able to share the cable connection.
Best option - ebay the current thing and put the cash towards a replacement. |
