WRT54 slow network speeds

Got a WRT54G on a 3 computer network. It's a bit of a mishmash - desktop running Me, 2 laptops running XP SP2 and 2000 respectively, the desktop being hardwired to the router and the laptops connected wirelessly (54mb nominal). The network speeds (PC to PC transfer not internet) seem always to be a lot slower than I'd expect (even allowing for a big chunk of overheads) - it's almost as if the router's running the LAN at the speed of the internet connection.

Anyone got any inspired ideas for things to try / investigate?

What speeds are you getting for data transfer?

Ignoring the fact that Windows itself can limit the data transfer rate, remember that you won't get anywhere near the 54mbps transfer rate - and that the more devices there are on the wireless lan the lower the rate will be as well.

No, I've taken that into account - we're talking 1 mb or thereabouts, estimating by the time to transfer largish files. Seems pretty slow even allowing for lots of overheads. It's not as if I'm trying to transfer halfway down the garden either - same room as the router.

OK, how big is the file, how long does it take to transfer and what are you using to transfer it? FTP? Windows file sharing?

Are the laptops b or g wireless? Do you have your WRT54G setup in the right mode (ad-hoc or infrastructure - can't remember which it's buried in the manual), and is the router's speed settings b/g matching the laptops?
