Monitor Internet Usage
Hi,
As you know I moved recently and have now gone with Tiscali as the BB supplier. We've got a Linksys WAG54GS already to go live when Tiscali and BT pull their finger out! Now - the question is - I want to be able to manage the internet usage so we don't go into FUP / AUP land... How can I monitor two wireless PC's for traffic at specified times of the day? I used ISPMonitor on one PC, but now there are two PC's on the network. I suppose I could install this on both PC's and simply add up the daily /weekly / monthly usage, but there must be a better way? Any ideas? Lee |
Re: Monitor Internet Usage
The problem is that (most) usage monitors measure all the traffic going through the NIC. This means that any traffic between the 2 computers (i.e., not internet traffic) will be included in the stats. What you would want is some tool that measures traffic through the router, but I don't know any tool that does that.

Re: Monitor Internet Usage
There used to be an application that would install mini monitors on each PC and then one PC would kind of ping each PC on the network and gather up and add up all the stats.
This required a certain port to be used which isnt supported by some networks. Cant remember what it was called but I'm sure someone will do. |
Re: Monitor Internet Usage
A lot of ISP's actually monitor your useage for you, mine let's me view my daily upload/download amounts via my control panel.

Re: Monitor Internet Usage
You either want a proxy server/firewall (Eg isa) that everything goes through. You might be able to use netmonitor with a card in promiscuous mode - But thats not going to give you any nice charts!
Otherwise you are going with what Halcyon said and get a 3rd party product to install on each machine (I prefer the proxy way - No interfearence then :)) |
