The law is an ass & judges are twits

Trying to be careful here, Nicholas van Hoogstraten, :afire: remember this prime example of a modern feudal baron, famous paymaster of the tyrant mugabe, last year convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to ten years at Her Majesty's pleasure. Suddenly, following the overturning of his conviction and his appeal for a retrial, Judge Sir Stephen Mitchell, has agreed with Hoogstraaten's attorneys there was no case to answer and so he is freed!

It appears he had no idea that the thugs Robert Knapp and David Croke who attacked and killed Mohammed Raja were going to do so. It beggars belief, that following conviction by judge and jury last year, this obnoxious Nicholas van Hoogstraten, may be able to sue for compensation. Perhaps it's time for judges to provide the compensation rather than the public. Certain judges and people like Nicholas van Hoogstraten it might be suggested, make a farce of the law.

Um, can you give us a link to the story so I have a clue who you're talking about?

So if the law is an "ass" (or any other body part) does that mean if your car was nicked or you were mugged, burgled etc, you wouldn't go to the police?

OK, I had assumed that the antics of Mr Hoogstraaten were well known.

I am at a loss to follow what you are trying to say. I have no problem with the police services, but the inability of judges to judge correctly most of the time, makes you wonder what kind of performance standards, appraisals, exist for them.

There are very few checks and balances on judges. One of the papers this weekend (I forget which, I read so many of the darned things at work this morning :spin: ) ran a piece on which judges tend to get appealed against. In some cases, there are serving judges in the UK who of their last 60-70 cases have later seen 30-40 of them overturned on appeal, usually when the defence demonstrates they misled the jury.

The sad thing is that judges in common with the Home Secretary and most MPs are completely out of touch with what the ordinary person in the street wants.

Maybe if we cut their salaries and forced them to undergo the same ordeals that ordinary people go through we might actually get some real justice in this country.

Now that's the best idea I've heard in a long time
:tu:

but can I take your idea one step further, sack the lot of them, and replace them with members of the public. we could all work on a rota system, who wants to be prime minister for month ;)

Ah yes, that's the one, would be feudal Baron, Nicholas van Hoogstraten, low life ****: as my late mum would have said, "he needs to have his mouth washed with a large bar of soap." He provided large sums of money to fund mugabe's zanu pf party during the recent parliamentary and presidential elections.
