WRT54GS Firmware question...

First off, great router and a nice upgrade to what I had before. Im not a total noob to this, but I have a question thats probably really stupid regarding the firmware.

Ive just bought this router and under the unit I see I have a v5.1 model. I would like to update the firmware to have the latest fixes but all I can see over at the Linksys UK site is firmware for upto v4. linky linky

tia...

[edit] now Im lost, If I go to the states version of the Linksys site, they have firmware for 5.0 and 6.0 but not [b]5.1. link Also - in the change log for the v5 update, it says "- Adds support for WRT54GS v.6" Does this mean that the firmware from here on is generic between the 2 versions ?

don't use the us firmware, it may not work. I tried it with an older version and it didn't work properly.

what functions are you trying to fix?

if ain't broke don't fix it

Re: WRT54GS Firmware question...

I've got wrt54gs v5.1 UK running firmware v.1.50.8 from US site, no problems apparent after a week, or so.

I'm running Utorrent after having issues with other client software. It's been steady at 50kB/s upload and download on regular torrents and it will rise to 1.12MB/s on a well seeded torrent like OpenOffice. I reckon that's a reasonable test of the firmware, considering the issues p2p poses with Linksys firmware.

BTW surfing speeds on this machine, the other two wired desktops and a wifi laptop are unaffected by Utorrent running in the background.

The version 5.1 router is brand new,so i guess there isn't a newer version out yet. I'd just wait until they release a new european version for that router.

I'm trying to figure out how to upgrade mine now! I've got the a V4 wrt54gs firmware but don't know what to do with the .bin file. I think i need to google.

Goto your router settings in I.E, you want the Administration tab, then Firmware Upgrade and browse for your bin file. Hit the upgrade button and its done. ;)

Yes i just found that just before you posted and it's very quick and simple and i didn't brick it! Thanks for the post anyway. :)

I went from version 1.50.3(1.05.3) in the router setup to version 1.50.6(1.05.6)

Good stuff... they really should have an "auto update firmware via net" button in there somehwere. :)

Yep sure should. What are you going to do with yours? Just wait until a european firmware is released sounds like a good option or you could email Linksys technical support and ask them? :)

Il wait until v5.1 appears on the UK site. I had a BEFSR41 v3 before and when I updated that I didnt take any notice what site I got the fw from. Might explaine why the connection on it dropped at least once a week.

Since getting this router I have noticed I can get into more servers on Burnout Revenger on the 360. Interesting. I may reflash my old router with the UK version and restore the factory settings before giving it a new lease of life to my partners old man who currently can only play on his xbox or pc one at a time... :)

Just a quick word of advice.. Always upgrade your router via a wired connection. If you use a wireless connection and the connection drops in the middle of the upgrade, you may trash the router.

Re: WRT54GS Firmware question...

One of the main differences to be aware of when flashing router firmware for different regions is the channels you'll get access to as different regions have different legal requirements.

Using an 802.11 router, US firmware will give you channels 1 to 11, European will give you 1 to 13 and Japanese (if I remember rightly) will give you channels 1 to 14.

Might not make much difference as usually you'll only use channels 1, 6 or 11 (remember that the router will use 3 channels either side of the one you select to get it's bandwidth) but it's worth remembering.
