Wierd problem
I have a problem with my Internet connection. I managed to track the problem down to the cable splitter but have not been able to sort the problem out. I started losing my Internet connection about a month ago after Telewest upgraded the local network. Replacing a three way splitter back to the original two way splitter seemed to solve the problem until a few days ago. I again started losing the connection. I replaced with a new 2-way splitter but still no connection. I then removed the splitter and connected directly with a F plug coupler. Got my connection back? I can connect directly with the F plug coupler but not through a splitter? (tried 3) I can still recieve TV through the splitter just not the Internet. Even with the TV connector unplugged. Obviously I would like to solve the problem so I don't need to keep changing connection back and forth to watch TV or use the net. Any advice would be much appreciated.

:welcome: to Cable Forum :D
Chances are you've really screwed up your connection by plugging / unplugging various different connectors. Few of the connectors available are as robustly crimped as provided by the cable co's. If the connection isn't good there will be signal loss, or the risk of interference being introduced back into the cable network affecting you, or your neighbours. Simply put the cables prior to the modem / set top box shouldn't be messed around with by customers. You may well have to bite the bullet and get a TW engineer in to sort it for you, but be prepared to pay. Thread moved to TW broadband discussion |
Re: Wierd problem
Thanks for the reply.
Don't think it is the connectors. Tried replacing with new splitter & cable. The same problem. Only managed to connect to net when cable splitter was removed and changed to F plug coupler direct connection. The connectors are connected properly. Haven't touched the box only the cabling & connectors. It is working fine right now, with the cable splitter disconnected. |
Re: Wierd problem
Changing the length of the connected wires, by adding and removing things from any splitter is enough to affect signal quality, especially if something was marginal.
Was the splitter originally fitted by you? |
Re: Wierd problem
The original cable splitter was fitted by Telewest engineers. I changed to a three way splitter. Worked fine for a year. Telewest upgraded the local network and everything started to go wrong. Changed back to the original two way splitter a month ago, again everything worked fine until a few days ago. I can still get TV through either the 3 or 2 way splitter not the Internet. I can access the Internet when I remove the splitter and connect directly to the coupler. It's kinda like they have decreased the power of the signal or something.

Re: Wierd problem
Starting to edge more towards a faulty modem. There is no upstream connection when the splitter is connected. Seems to be a signal power problem. Anyway got an engineer coming next week.

Re: Wierd problem
Turned out to be a faulty connector in the street. As I thought I was losing upstream power, 12db. Add a further 3 db loss (more with 3 way splitter) from the splitter that takes me over the acceptable loss threshold when the splitter was connected. That was why I could connect without the splitter. The engineer replaced the connector in the street and disconected a 10db attenuator from the back of the modem (did not even notice it??)
Back to my three way splitter and everything is working great. |
