a 70,000 strong representation of canadian sonngwriters are seeking court help over web sites which offer commercial music for free they want these websites to pay royalty fees

they also go on to argue that ISP'S should be paying royaltes if there subscribers are downloading music with p2p applications

this could have huge ramifications for other ISP'S around the world if the court favors SOCAN with the extra fees being passed on to the subscriber

Stupid idea. Apparently, some of the proceeds from sales of blank cds in Canada goes to the same organisation, [sarcasm]'cos of course blank cd's are only used for illegal purposes[/sarcasm] :rolleyes:

Apparently though we're protected from something similar because in the EU ISP's are defined as information carriers only and cannot be responsible for what is transmitted over their networks.
