Linksys WRT54G Firmware

I have had my Linksys WRT54G router working without problems (once it was correctly set up) for nearly two years now.

I have never upgradede the firmware, which I believe is now old, as I think the model is a version 2.

Is it worth upgrading the firmware? or is there no benefits, only problems.

If so, how do I find out what my exact model number is, as I remember looking for this info in the past and could not find it?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Gary

Dunno whether it's worth an upgrade or not. Why fix somethign that isn't broke.

As for the current version, log onto your router (usually 192.168.1.1) then check the status tab - should show up as the first line.

Depends what you want from the firmware. If it does what you want and does it reliably then why change that?

If you're after some of the flashier functionality that new routers have then, as you have one of the older versions, you might want to take a look at DD-WRT for more advanced functionality.

The version the OP is refering to is the hardware version not the firmware version

Has anyone tried flashing their Linksys WRT54Gx router to the likes of the DD-WRT firmwares available?

Any good? Would you recommend?

Sorry if it seems I'm hijacking this thread, but it's along the lines of firmwares from the original poster. :)

And I think if you look at the bottom of your router, it should tell you either a serial number which you can lookup to get the router version or the actual version it's self.

Or, give this a try http://192.168.1.1/SysInfo.htm you may need to change the ip address to that of your router.

And good old wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G

Re: Linksys WRT54G Firmware

I use the v23 final build (not the SP1 or whatever it is) and have done since it was released at Christmas.

Seems to be very stable (although it's scheduled to reboot itself at 3AM every Sunday) and provides a large number of features. For my uses, the QoS it uses is ideal and works perfectly.

The firmware will only run on the older models though - Linksys went through a re-design to shift the WRT54G (and WRT54GS I think) onto a newer and cheaper platform that didn't have the extra memory or Linux on it. The 54GL they introduced (at a premium of course!) to cater for the custom firmware community was canned shortly afterwards.

If you're interested in the features that firmware like DD-WRT does give you though you should take a look at the forum link i posted previously - the firmware does now work and is supported (to a certain degree) on other routers so can still be used.

Thanks brundles. I have been reading up on the DD-WRT firmware that is available and it does look very interesting.

I might see if I can pick up a cheapy router off ebay and have a bit play with it, wouldn't like to turn my current one in to a brick.

A very timely report on how to get DD-WRT running on the newest non-Linux WRT54G builds :)
