Speed Test results issue: on 10MB but only getting 5MB

Hi All

Just thought I'd try out the speed test while on here, and to my dismay I see that I have a poor result returned. I am on the 10MB BB service and here's my results:

Quote:

Sat, 24 Jun 2006 08:10:16 GMT

1st 512K took 511 ms = 1002 KB/sec, approx 8256 Kbps, 8.06 Mbps
2nd 512K took 991 ms = 516.6 KB/sec, approx 4257 Kbps, 4.16 Mbps
3rd 512K took 931 ms = 549.9 KB/sec, approx 4531 Kbps, 4.42 Mbps
4th 512K took 812 ms = 630.5 KB/sec, approx 5195 Kbps, 5.07 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 5560 Kbps, 5.43 Mbps
Is this right?

OK, I don't expect to get exactly 10MB, but surely I should get better performance than what I am experiencing. Should it not be a lot closer to 10MB at least?

Hi there
I am on a trial period for a month on the 10 Meg speed and my speeds are similar to yours. My modem is the Terayon 210 external modem and keep reading conflicting views on whether this modem is capable of providing 10 meg or not. There will be no point in upgrading after the trial period if I cannot get this solved, so would appreciate some ammunition to use when phoning customer services, can anyone confirm that they are getting anything close to 10 meg with a Terayon 210.
regards
John Calleja

That's the same Modem as the one I have, the Terayon TJ210. I am now very interested in obtaining similar info. Thanks.

Do we have a right to ask NTL for an upgrade? I have had this modem now for at least 5 years.

Where abouts are you going to do these speed tests?

Huh? not sure what you mean there Mr J. I ran the speedtest available on here and got the results I posted above.

What do you mean... 'where'?

I was getting simular speeds to you, but recently, ntl promiced to upgrade my area to support 10Mbps fully. For the last couple of days i've been very happy, from good servers like Microsoft, i've been getting a steady 1.13MB/s transfer speed.

This is the speed test i took now:

Sat, 24 Jun 2006 12:09:27 UTC
1st 512K took 469 ms = 1091.7 KB/sec, approx 8996 Kbps, 8.79 Mbps
2nd 512K took 469 ms = 1091.7 KB/sec, approx 8996 Kbps, 8.79 Mbps
3rd 512K took 406 ms = 1261.1 KB/sec, approx 10391 Kbps, 10.15 Mbps
4th 512K took 531 ms = 964.2 KB/sec, approx 7945 Kbps, 7.76 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9082 Kbps, 8.87 Mbps

I'll be a very happy ntl customer, and won't bitch aslong as it stays like this :)

I know I am on the 10MB service, but I am not getting the throughput or performance associated with it according to the speed test I ran from here.

Also, I need to ascertain if the Terayon 210 Modem is capable of delivering 10MB service.

Re: Speed Test results issue: on 10MB but only getting 5MB

That's exactly what I mean, which speed test did you use and where is it. I didn't realise that there was one on here.

Anyway, get yourself an ftp client, fillezilla or something and then get yourself connected to ftp.blueyonder.co.uk - tick option box for annonymous username and pass in your ftp client - move in to the blueyondergames folder, then demos folder and start a download on a decent size file, 500mb to 1gb. See what your speed is there during the download, mines is usually about 1.1/1.2MB/s, which is what you should be getting. If you are getting less, then let ntl's customer services know and I'm sure they will look in to it for you.

The reason I say try this is that some speed tests don't give you an accurate result, they go off and download from ftp servers on the other side of the world or ping servers on the other side of the world, which your never gonna get a decent speed result from. Also, trying to download something which is now all tied in to the same infrastructure as ntl's, should really show you what your true download speed is.

Also, have you tried running a few traces from your machine to websites, see if you have any spikes along the way?

At the top of this page Mr J, is the link to the speed test, most people use this as it gets the info from NTL. ( I think). NTL c/s say I'm on 4 meg, but the above speed test says 2 meg......One of 'ems right..!!!

when my av is on (kaspersky6.0) and with the web scan on my speed results drop right down......

and after its turned off.......

I got my cable modem today after the STB was carried away. I'm really happy with the speeds.

Sat, 24 Jun 2006 15:55:29 UTC

1st 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps
2nd 512K took 437 ms = 1171.6 KB/sec, approx 9654 Kbps, 9.43 Mbps
3rd 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps
4th 512K took 421 ms = 1216.2 KB/sec, approx 10021 Kbps, 9.79 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9827 Kbps, 9.6 Mbps

Kaspersky's Web Anti-Virus component can affect speed and it eats up way too much CPU power if you allow it to scan the NNTP port and download at 10mbit speeds.

I only get between 5-7mb on this sites speed test, but i know for a fact i can download at my full 10mb as i always get max using newsgroups. I think speed test results are very unreliable and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Hi all again.
I have read all the above posts and all those that are saying that they get a 10 meg throughput still have not confirmed what modem they use to get that speed. Would poeple please confirm that they are getting 10 Meg with the Terayon TJ210 which is the question in hand, and also pehaps what site and file they downloaded to check the download speed or what test they did so we can all check the same stuff, otherwise its back to 4 meg for me and save a tenner a month. There is no way i am upgrading permanently to 10 meg if the tests are this poor.

Hi all yet again
It seems that this argument is as old as the hills, and the answers lay here on this website. So I aim you here to see if the Terayon is capable of 10 meg or not.
