Hi
I know someone who has NTL and a normal desktop pc with a wireless ethernet card, and they also have a laptop. they bought a belkin 125 wireless router how do i go about setting them up. I know how to install drivers etc and wire them up but do i need to do anything to make them connect to NTL.
Is there a guide or something i can use as the lady tried following the instructions on the manula but phoned me and asked for my help. I am not a newbie with pcs but havent ever done a wireless connection before only cabled ones. whats the difference i got to do?

If this is the worng part of the forum im sorry but i did look for a similar post.

:welcome: to Cable Forum :D

Should be fairly simple to sort out, altough I'm not familiar with the Belkin stuff, the principles are generally the same:

Switch off PCs. cable Modem (or STB - Set Top Box)
connect via ethernet router to modem / STB
temporarily connect ethernet between one PC and router (you can go wireless later)
power up modem, let settle, then router, let settle and then wired PC
You should now be able to get internet connection (if using a STB you may have to register therouter using the account information originally sent by ntl: user ID, password etc)
Now you can configure the wireless setup using the admin pages of the router through your wired PC's browser - network name, channel number , SSID, WEP settings etc all as required for secuity.
Check you can go wireless by powering your second PC, or wireless lappy and connecting, using the settings you input above.
If you are OK, and want to be totally wireless, power off the first PC, unplug, power back on and start the wireless as you did above.

On that setup my friend set them up and was connected via cable to the laptop but when tried going to wireless it wouldnt work, she hasnt tried the desktop yet will there be the same problem?

If the connection via the ethernet and router worked, then it's the wireless settings that were the problem, not the internet side.

Was wireless on the lappy enabled, with all drivers / software properly loaded? Could the lappy find a network, but just not connect. Tyr disabling antivirus and firewalls on the lappy - they can sometimes get in the way (you can reanable later after your troubleshooting)

to change the network name, channel number , SSID, WEP do i goto control panel netowrk and internet options then the tab set up a wireless network for home or office and then select setup a new wirless network. do i select do it manuallyn or auto. Do i have to use these same settings on all the pcs? if i do it auto on all the pcs wont the WEP number be different or shall i copy it down also how can i tell if wireless is enabled on the lappy and desktop and i think i read on here that u need to select wireless on the router as well. I am going from what i have read never even seen the router or pc i wil attempt to wire up yet until sunday.
also whats the channel number i havent seen that yet
