Time for Peercache on NTL
NTL seem to be very interested in keeping down their external network bandwidth - hence the HTTP proxies.
So, why not use Peercache? It's basically a caching system for P2P apps. Everyone gets faster downloads, NTL needs less external bandwidth, everyone is a winner. And before anyone asks, yes it would be perfectly legal. It's just like the current proxy caches for HTTP - sure, some illegal stuff certainly does get cached but NTL are a network carrier and not responsible for that. |

Not so sure.. IIRC, NTL may well become reponsible for it if it is stored (cached) on their servers. |
Re: Time for Peercache on NTL
Hmm could be usefull for upcoming bbc playter etc that implenets p2p as this could really help in this legal use.

Re: Time for Peercache on NTL
Already a work in progress using Cachelogic kit, or was anyway no idea what the story is now.
The news story about the Ashton trials refers. |

Re: Time for Peercache on NTL
They will invoke the fabled Common Carrier Status and get away scot free (it also helps if you have bags of money to bribe the judge!)
The new Mainline Bit Torrent client, Allegro, is out now and this has with it support for ISP caching. As NTL are in talks with BT, I would say this could be coming our way soon. Now, that would mean that NTL would probably be caching copyrighted material, so they would only go into this arena with some kind of defence against prosecution (and awful cliches!). |
Re: Time for Peercache on NTL
ntl should move their http proxies to p2p proxies.
p2p data should be more static then a http page thats subject to change like forums etc. p2p is now a bigger traffic churner then http. it should give a real performance boost rather then dropping performance like http proxies do. |
Re: Time for Peercache on NTL
One other advantage of caching P2P traffic is that it will reduce the amount each person is uploading. After all, a lot of people just turn their clients off after their download finishes, and so the quicker that happens the less they will upload.
Plus, the swarm benefits from NTL effectively seeding. |
Re: Time for Peercache on NTL
yep well I dont think it will make people switch of their clients, the ones that keep them on will still do that to seed but they should be doing less seeding as the p2p proxies take the bulk of the load :)
